A brazen cybercriminal group has launched a virtual shakedown against Australian retail tech provider GaP Solutions. The attackers, known as LockBit, claim to have stolen sensitive company data and are threatening to leak it unless a ransom is paid.
This sinister ultimatum arrived out of the blue last week when LockBit posted their demands on a dark web site. They provided no evidence of actually accessing GaP’s systems, nor disclosed the ransom amount. Yet the seriousness of their threats and reputation leaves little doubt the situation is dire.

Australian Software Company Ambushed by Notorious Hackers
LockBit is essentially cybercrime’s comeback kid. Just weeks ago, authorities dealt them a major blow by seizing infrastructure and orchestrating arrests. But this hydra-like syndicate quickly reformed to resume their global hacking spree.
Their choice of GaP Solutions as one of their first new targets compounds the disruption. As a provider of point-of-sale and retail management software, GaP powers vital technology for countless Australian businesses.
Thankfully, the company says thus far there are “no signs” customer data or services have been compromised. But with LockBit looming, uncertainty still casts a shadow. GaP has mobilized a forensic investigation to determine the hackers’ true reach.
In the meantime, Australian cyber police are likely rounding back up to batter LockBit once more. However, like a movie villain that just won’t stay dead, this insidious hacker gang has proven impossible to eliminate.
Should ransom demands go unpaid, Australian businesses could be the next victims. So GaP and authorities race to shield customer networks before the harmful ripples of this attack can spread even wider.
