Dota 2 revealed its newest hero, Muerta, at The International 2022 (TI11) in Singapore, with a teaser trailer shown following the all-star match. Muerta will be the 124th hero to join Dota 2’s ever-expanding roster when it is officially released.
The long-running MOBA game allows players to take on the roles of heroes with distinct abilities and roles. Dota evolved from a competitive game among casuals and pros to a Netflix series titled Dota: Dragon’s Blood, which follows the adventures of Dragon Knight and Mirana. The game has been around for nearly ten years, but the esports scene has grown larger than ever thanks to The International.
Dota 2 introduced Muerta, a hero with skull-like features and marigold flowers on her head inspired by the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, ahead of the TI11 Grand Finals (Day of the Dead). She pulls out a gun and transforms into a wraith-like being surrounded by Ghosts, ready to pierce the veil and “haunt the lanes,” possibly implying that she is a phantom walking in the land of the living in the 50-second teaser video. The plan is to have her available in Dota 2 sometime in early 2023.
Although Dota 2 hasn’t revealed much about Muerta’s abilities, some speculate that she’ll be a ranged carry or an agility-based hero like Sniper. One YouTube commenter speculated that even after dying in-game, she might still be able to help the team. Meanwhile, others in Dota 2 have begun piecing together her potential lore. Based on Muerta’s monologue in the teaser, she and Phantom Assassin could be Sisters of the Veil.
The reveal of Muerta sparked a lot of excitement among Dota 2 fans. Even esports organizations like OG and Evil Geniuses appear eager to give her a try as soon as possible. Many fans also praised Muerta’s design, noting that the game now has a Mexican hero.
With over 120 heroes in the Dota 2 roster, some players may be looking for a hero with new and unique abilities that can complement the game’s strategy. The addition of Muerta has the potential to make or break the meta, and players, of course, prefer the former. If Muerta becomes a hard carry, it is hoped that she will be able to farm during battles. However, players will have to wait until 2023 to see the new hero for the first time.
