Industry analyst and noted iPhone leaker Ross Young recently made a surprising suggestion that Apple may be withholding its LTPO display technology from several upcoming models for the next two years. This news comes as a disappointment to many Apple fans who were hoping for an upgrade to the current ProMotion technology, which enables a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and can dynamically turn that rate down to 10Hz to save battery life.
ProMotion was first introduced on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, and it quickly became a fan favorite due to its smooth and seamless display. The feature was extended to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the refresh range was even extended down to 1Hz. However, the base models for both lines did not support ProMotion, leaving users disappointed.
Many people were eagerly anticipating the release of the iPhone 15, hoping that it would finally support ProMotion. Unfortunately, Young’s recent tweet seems to suggest otherwise. According to his post, the rumored iPhone 15 and subsequent iPhone 16 will continue to have LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) displays, which is the same type of OLED screen present on the iPhone 14. This means that the screen quality will remain stagnant for base models until 2025 when the base and rumored iPhone 17 launches with ProMotion, allowing it to catch up to five-year-old hardware. Additionally, every standard iPhone afterward will have the same technology.
This news has sparked a lot of discussion within the tech community, with many people expressing their disappointment over Apple’s decision to withhold the LTPO display technology from its base models. However, some experts have pointed out that this move may be part of Apple’s larger strategy to differentiate its product lines and offer more premium features on its higher-end models.
Whatever the reason behind this decision, it is clear that Apple fans will have to wait a little longer to experience the benefits of LTPO displays. As always, Apple is keeping its plans under wraps, so it remains to be seen what the future holds for the company’s product lineup.
