Some Amazon employees will be required to relocate as part of the company’s new policy mandating three days per week of in-office work, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. This requirement applies to remote workers, including those hired for remote positions and employees who moved during the peak pandemic period.
Affected remote workers will need to report to “main hub” offices, such as Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, New York, and San Francisco, although other locations may also be included. The decision on who needs to relocate and where will be made on a departmental basis. However, the exact number of employees that will be affected by this policy has not been determined yet.
Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, announced the in-office mandate in February, and the company has since observed increased collaboration and connectivity among employees. However, some employees saw the policy as a blow, particularly as it coincided with widespread layoffs affecting around 27,000 workers that began in late 2022. In response to the return-to-office policy and the company’s environmental practices, hundreds of employees staged a walkout in May.
An Amazon representative stated that the company is continuously exploring ways to bring more teams together in the same locations and will directly communicate with employees about any decisions that will impact them.
