Splitgate 2 to Launch for Free on PC and Consoles in 2025

Developer 1047 Games has announced that Splitgate 2, the sequel to the 2021 first-person shooter Splitgate, will be available for free on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2025.

The upcoming game is a 4v4 multiplayer shooter built with Unreal Engine 5. It features fast-paced portal gunplay, objective-based game modes, and unique futuristic maps. The game will also include a faction system, customizable weapons, and iconic portals.

“In the summer of 2021, when we released Splitgate on PS4, we didn’t know what to expect,” said 1047 CEO Ian Proulx in an interview with PlayStation Blog. “We certainly weren’t ready for the millions of people who hopped online wanting to play our take on a first-person shooter,” Proulx noted that while Splitgate was a game they loved and that the community embraced, it wasn’t the game of their dreams.

Proulx continued, expressing that the upcoming sequel is “the game I dreamed of making when Nicholas Bagamian [CTO and Co-founder of 1047 Games] and I got together in a Stanford dorm and decided to put portals in a shooter.”

The team at 1047 Games has been working on Splitgate 2 for a long time and plans to share more details next month. Proulx explained that stopping development on Splitgate in 2022 was difficult, but the team knew that creating a sequel was the best path forward.

“We had to start fresh in some ways,” Proulx explained. “That meant building from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, with new character models, new maps, new weapons, and even new portal walls and portals.” Despite being a multiplayer shooter, a narrative writer has been hired to develop rich lore for Splitgate 2, with digital comics and cinematics set to arrive in the future.

Though the game won’t be released until 2025, Proulx already has plans for its future. He emphasized the importance of creating a game that can last a decade or more. “It’s not just about having lots of content ready at launch,” Proulx said. “It starts with the very foundations of design. While the first Splitgate was inspired by classic arena shooters, we realized that to create a modern game that lasts, we had to develop tools for a deep and satisfying gameplay loop.”

The foundation of this experience begins with Splitgate 2’s faction-based multiplayer, and although specific details haven’t been revealed yet, the announcement trailer offers a glimpse of what’s to come.
