Google has quietly rolled out an update to Google Maps on Android that significantly improves the speed and responsiveness of voice controls. Now, when users tap the microphone icon in the search bar and ask for directions, the new and improved Google Assistant will quickly provide the requested directions. It even suggests the fastest mode of transport when asked for the quickest route.
Previously, voice controls on Google Maps were sluggish and sometimes led to incorrect directions. With the update, users will see a large readout of their voice input, making it easier to spot any mishearings or misunderstandings. The new implementation of Google Assistant for directions feels much faster and more efficient.
In addition to voice input, the update also offers category options on the screen that users can tap to instantly view a list of nearby services that match the selected category. While these options are available on the main Google Maps screen as well, they don’t obstruct the user interface.
The update is a server-side change, meaning users don’t need to manually update the app to access the improved voice controls. It should already be available to Android users, making navigation on Google Maps faster and more user-friendly.
