2024 Ferrari 296 Challenge Unleashes 690 HP V6 Power

Purebred Performance: Ferrari's Newest Track Marvel

In a world where stringent emissions regulations are tightening the reins on automakers, launching performance cars solely powered by an internal combustion engine is becoming a formidable challenge. Even revered names like Ferrari are succumbing to the electric wave. The 296 GTB and its convertible counterpart, the 296 GTS, are perfect examples of Ferrari’s hybrid powertrain commitment. However, in the midst of this electrification wave, the 296 Challenge emerges as a thoroughbred race car, defiantly maintaining its pure V6 setup, untouched by hybrid assistance.

Unlike its road-going counterparts, the 296 Challenge won’t be burdened by the constraints of meeting emissions regulations, simply because it will be participating in the fiercely competitive Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli. This race-ready marvel marks the ninth model created for this esteemed competition, superseding the 488 Challenge Evo introduced back in 2020.

At the heart of the 2024 Ferrari 296 Challenge lies the well-known twin-turbo, 3.0-liter engine, unburdened by the hybrid component, much like its GT3 sibling introduced in 2023. Free from the regulations imposed on road cars, Ferrari’s engineers have unshackled the V6, allowing it to unleash a staggering 690 horsepower and 546 pound-feet (740 Newton-meters) of torque. While the road version of this six-cylinder powerhouse delivers “only” 663 hp, its combined output surges to a remarkable 830 hp thanks to the synergy with the electric motor.

With an astonishing 234 horsepower per liter, Ferrari proudly claims its engine sets new records for power in its segment. Notably, the 296 Challenge takes its place in history as the first race car in the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli to sport a 120-degree V6. Embracing such power comes with responsibilities, and thus, this track-only machine features carbon-ceramic brakes, an upgraded ABS system inherited from the 296 GTB, and brand-new Pirelli 19-inch tires, meticulously tailored for this racing application.

What truly sets the 296 Challenge apart is its aerodynamic prowess. This supercar generates more than 870 kilograms of downforce at 155 mph (250 km/h), a record-breaking feat for a single-make series race car.

The world will get a firsthand look at this track beast in Italy at the Mugello Circuit from October 24 to 30, during the highly anticipated Finali Mondiali.
