Windows 11’s 23H2 Update Potentially Coming Sooner Than Expected

Windows 11 users may be in for a quicker upgrade as Microsoft’s next major update, known as 23H2, appears to be well underway, according to recent clues spotted in the July cumulative update for the operating system.

The tech site, Windows Latest, discovered references to several packages related to ‘Moment 4’ in the July patch. Since the last feature update was referred to as ‘Moment 3’, it is highly likely that ‘Moment 4’ signifies the upcoming 23H2 feature update.

One significant finding is the testing of an enablement package named “Microsoft-Windows-23H2Enablement-Package.” Microsoft has previously confirmed that 23H2 will be an enablement package, which means the necessary files for the update will be preloaded onto Windows 11 PCs. These files can then be activated with a simple ‘enablement’ switch during launch, resulting in a small download and easy installation.

The groundwork for 23H2 is already being laid, which could potentially lead to an early release. While some speculate that it might even arrive in September, the rumor mill has generally pointed to a release in the fourth quarter of the year, making October a more realistic timeframe.

The recent updates to Windows 11 Beta channel, including a revamped File Explorer and RGB lighting hub, suggest that progress is indeed moving forward smoothly with the 23H2 update.

However, one potential obstacle to the “sooner rather than later” theory is Microsoft’s Copilot AI, which is intended to be included with the 23H2 update. Currently, the AI is in a very basic state, and it remains uncertain whether it will be fully ready for the upcoming update. It’s possible that it may either be delayed or launched in a limited version, as the latter option might not make a favorable impression for Microsoft’s AI ambitions.

Regardless of the specific release date, Windows 11 users can look forward to an upcoming update that promises enhanced features and improvements to the OS experience.
