Meta launches new group chat tools for WhatsApp

Meta has kicked off 2026 with a significant update for WhatsApp, introducing three new tools specifically designed to enhance group chat functionality. These features—member tags, event reminders, and text stickers—aim to solve common pain points in group coordination while adding more creative ways for users to interact. This update continues Meta’s recent momentum in modernizing the platform, following the launch of WhatsApp for Apple Watch and new AI integration late last year.

The standout feature of this update is “member tags,” which allows users to assign specific roles to themselves or others within a group. This is particularly useful for organized groups, such as sports teams or professional projects. For instance, in a soccer team chat, members can tag themselves as “Coach,” “Goalkeeper,” or “Captain.” These tags are group-specific, meaning a user can have different labels in different chats, providing much-needed context in crowded conversations where it might not be immediately clear who is responsible for what.

To assist with logistics, WhatsApp has also added “event reminders.” This tool allows group members to create specific events with all relevant details—such as time, location, and purpose—housed in a single accessible place. Crucially, the feature includes custom reminder notifications to ensure participants don’t forget to join a scheduled call or travel to a physical gathering. This effectively turns a standard group chat into a lightweight event-planning tool, reducing the need for external calendar apps for casual social coordination.

On the creative side, the new “text sticker” tool allows users to transform any typed word or phrase into a colorful, stylized graphic directly within the app. By typing text into the Sticker Search bar, users can generate custom stickers and add them to their personal packs for future use. This feature is intended to make messaging more expressive and fun, moving beyond standard emojis and pre-made sticker packs. These updates are rolling out globally to all users, further cementing WhatsApp’s position as a versatile communication platform for both personal and professional use.
