Ubisoft has officially revealed the next big Assassin’s Creed game, after a series of leaks. Mirage, as predicted, would transfer the time-traveling franchise to 9th-century Baghdad, with players taking on the role of a fledgling assassin named Basim. (Fans may recall seeing that name in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla; Mirage takes set two decades before that game.)
Notably, Ubisoft claims that the game will return to the series action-adventure origins, which implies that RPG features from more recent titles will not be featured. Mirage is scheduled to debut in 2023. Also worth noting: Shohreh Aghdashloo will play Basim’s assassination mentor in an amazing casting choice.
But that’s not all for the series, as Ubisoft made a number of other significant statements about the franchise’s future.
Let’s begin with mobile. Ubisoft is working on the first open-world Assassin’s Creed for smartphones, entitled “Jade,” which will game set in ancient China and allow players to build their own avatar. You may even parkour over the Great Wall, which seems to be enjoyable. “Codename Jade” is scheduled to be released shortly. Ubisoft also claims it’s working on an undisclosed mobile project for Netflix’s gaming service, but no specifics are available at this time.
In terms of the core series’ future, Ubisoft revealed a few pieces of information about the titles that will follow Mirage. One of these games, codenamed “Red,” is being developed by Ubisoft’s Quebec City office and will be set in feudal-era Japan, while another, codenamed “Hexe,” is being worked on by the Montreal team; there aren’t many specifics on that one yet, but it looks to be about witches in some sort. While Mirage looks to be abandoning the RPG aspects of titles like Odyssey, it appears that Red and Hexe will keep them.
In other news, the publisher revealed further information about its Assassin’s Creed “Infinity” project, which looks to be an online center that will link the major games as well as separate multiplayer projects. Consider it similar to the Animus from the games, only you use it to launch video games.
