Comcast claims that 2-gig speeds are now available to’millions’ of customers

Comcast intends to provide multi-gig internet speeds to 34 cities throughout the United States by the end of this year, with the goal of eventually reaching more than 50 million homes by the end of 2025. According to a press statement, the business has already begun deploying 2-gigabit internet speeds throughout its network in Colorado Springs, CO, Augusta, GA, Panama City Beach, FL, and Philadelphia, PA.

Customers in these locations will also get access to upload speeds that Comcast claims are five to ten times better than what they presently have. Even with the new Gigabit x2 package, upload speeds seem to be limited to 200Mbps, although Comcast wants to alter that. It will provide multi-gig symmetrical speeds next year, allowing for multi-gig download and upload rates.

While fibre optic internet is supposed to provide symmetrical uploads and downloads, cable has fallen behind. However, with DOCSIS 4.0, a high-bandwidth internet standard that allows for up to 10Gbps downloads and 6Gbps uploads, providers such as Comcast may provide symmetrical cable connections. Comcast is gradually moving to the new standard and attained 4Gbps upload and download speeds during a January test.

Despite the fact that AT&T, Frontier, Verizon, and Google are extending their fiber networks, the service is still mostly confined to people in metropolitan regions. Symmetrical speeds on cable networks might be a welcome choice for folks who require a faster connection but do not live in a fiber-optic region.

Customers in Colorado Springs, Augusta, Panama City Beach, and Philadelphia will not need to update their modems to get Comcast’s higher (but not symmetrical) 2-gig speeds for the time being.
