Toto Wolff’s Rigorous Routine to Eliminate ‘Trivial’ Lifestyle Decisions During Race Weekends

Toto Wolff has revealed that during a race weekend, he allocates no time to “trivial” matters such as clothing choices or meal decisions. With over a decade of experience representing Mercedes on the global racing circuit, Wolff has become a seasoned presence in the paddock, surpassed in tenure only by Christian Horner and the retiring Franz Tost.

Wolff’s race weekend attire is notably consistent, characterized by a white Mercedes-branded shirt neatly tucked into dark trousers. Weather permitting, he may don a black Mercedes coat or jacket. For viewers of the “Drive to Survive” series, Wolff’s preference for pumpernickel, a dense, slightly sweet rye bread, as his meal of choice has become a familiar motif.

The Mercedes team principal explained his commitment to routine, highlighting his desire to avoid wasting time on what he considers trivial matters. Wolff emphasized, “For me, it is really reducing trivial things. I’m wearing the same clothes, I’m eating the same food – even to the point that my assistants book the same hotel room for me every single year.”

His preferred meal includes pumpernickel with butter and ham, accompanied by a small cappuccino (half of which he consumes, with the other half saved for later). For dinner, he maintains consistency, opting for chicken breast with tomato salad.

In addition to his penchant for routine, Wolff shared insights into his unexpected journey into motorsport. His initial exposure to Formula 3 racing, courtesy of a friend’s invitation, sparked a profound passion within him. As he ventured onto the racetrack and experienced the electrifying atmosphere of the grid, Wolff realized that motorsport was his calling.

“It’s controlling the uncontrollable,” Wolff explained, referring to the allure of motorsport. “Being able to ride that wild horse and trying to be in control. That is the fascinating thing that caught me in racing.” It was this fascination and the thrill of mastering the unpredictable that drew him into the world of motorsport.
