Google Chat has replaced Hangouts, and banners will now warn users about potential phishing and malware assaults coming from personal accounts, Google revealed on Thursday. This Google Chat update is the latest in Google’s efforts to combat phishing.
Google outlined various security steps it has introduced to improve user safety during its 2022 I/O developer conference, including warnings about potential security risks and solutions to resolve them. Google also announced further security improvements, such as extended two-step authentication, ad customization, and increased data security.
Google’s new warning banners first appeared in Gmail on Workspace accounts to alert users to attempts to trick them into clicking on a link that could lead to malware, phishing, or ransomware. Google added the banners to Google Docs at the end of April, warning users about suspected malicious files in multiple Google Workspace apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drawing) regardless of where they opened the link from.
This new capability will be accessible for personal Google accounts as well as all Google Workspace clients over the coming few weeks.
