TikTok Launches ‘Series’: A Fresh Monetization Option for Creators to Charge for Content

TikTok has long been speculated to be implementing tools that would enable authors to hide some material behind a paywall. The rumours come true today. In a blog post, the firm revealed Series, a new tool that would enable artists to place their work behind a paywall and charge followers to watch it.

According to the firm, Series lets “qualified” producers to “publish Collections of premium material behind a paywall that viewers may buy access to.” One Series may have up to 80 videos, each of which can be up to 20 minutes long, providing consumers with a new, lengthier format in which to watch their favourite artists and material.”

According to the corporation, Series is only one of several ways it aims to monetize the social media network. For the time being, the new paywall function is only accessible to “selected authors with applications to join opening in the coming months.” So don’t paywall your Ninja Turtles costume design just yet.

Today’s news comes only a few weeks after TikTok launched the Creativity Program, a new method for artists to earn money on the social media site. According to the firm, this initiative will enable authors to “create larger income potential and unlock more intriguing, real-world possibilities.”

While the firm adds new revenue tools, it must also battle with governments throughout the globe who have banned the app on devices. At the end of February, Canada became the latest government to do so.
