Acura’s resurrected, fifth-generation Integra arrived with a set of expectations. Longtime Acura fans want involvement, enjoyment, and a high-quality interior with a manual shifter jammed between the front seats. But, above all, fans of the DC2 Integra expected one thing: a performance trim stage.
That trim is here. The new Type S is not the old Type R, but it bears the weight of its sport-compact pedigree. Enthusiasts are looking for something special, something worthy of the embossed bumper emblem, and they’ll get their first look at it this weekend at the Rolex 24 in Daytona.
A disguised Integra Type S will make its first public appearance in the United States on the famed Daytona street circuit, leading the 61-car field through the opening laps of the race. It will then retreat to the paddock, where fans may gawk and gape at its mysteriously covered body. With the vehicle not expected to be released until the summer, Acura is keeping details close to its breast. The car’s appearance, on the other hand, may be in full public view – if you can detect its contours and angles through the camo.
Acura is no stranger to Daytona, having finished first and second in the Rolex 24 last year. When you’re the reigning champion, going home to defend your title, a little amount of showboating is acceptable — even expected.
