The Last of Us Online has been cancelled

In what was some truly heartbreaking news for online gaming fans, Naughty Dog, the developer behind the hit game series ‘The Last of Us’, announced that they have stopped working on the online version of their popular game.

According to the developer, the team responsible for developing the online version of ‘The Last of Us Online’ had a clear idea of how they wanted to proceed with the whole project, but as the work progressed, it became increasingly apparent to the developer that creating an online game meant creating an ecosystem for future online content, to keep gamers engaged. What this meant was that they would have no bandwidth to create single player, story driven games.

Back in 2022, Naughty Dog showed off some concept art for the Last of Us Online game, and also acknowledged the fact that gamers are probably excited to get started with this new experience. The overall reception was overwhelmingly positive and the world waited with bated breath for more updates on this project, but they did not come.

It is now clear why these updates didn’t come, as the developer was holding internal discussions to decide whether or not this project is worth it. It looks like after due diligence, it is now apparent to the developer that it is no longer feasible, and that the team is better off working on creating immersive single player, story-driven content.
