The Hyundai Elantra N may be getting a bigger engine

Hyundai just jazzed up the Elantra N – new grille, new bumpers, and they even shed 33 pounds by swapping out the wheels. But here’s the kicker: they’re already cooking up the next one, and it’s going to pack a bigger engine.

Albert Biermann spilled the beans in an interview with CarExpert. He used to be the big shot at BMW for 31 years, then hopped on the Hyundai train in 2015. Now, as the Executive Technical Advisor, he’s dropping hints about a 2.5 turbo engine for the next Elantra. According to him, Australia and the U.S. are on board with it, but elsewhere? Not so much – seems like everyone’s daydreaming about EVs.

By the way, Biermann played a big role in creating the N division. He retired in 2021 but still hangs around as the go-to advisor.

Right now, the Elantra N is rocking a 2.0-liter engine, churning out 276 horsepower and 289 pound-feet of torque. But the next one? They’re eyeing a beefier 2.5-liter engine, like the one in the Sonata N Line and the 2024 Genesis G70 – 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque.

And the 2024 Elantra N got a makeover – tweaked power steering, some fancy urethane in the rear suspension for smoother rides, tire pressure tweaks, a new low-friction universal joint, and a gearbox facelift for that snappy feel. Still can choose between a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic.

When’s the party happening for the 2024 Elantra N? January. Price tag? Hush-hush for now, but the current one starts at $32,900. So, get ready for a wilder Elantra N ride!
