The Gran Turismo film from Sony will be released in theatres in August 2023

According to a new source, Sony’s planned Gran Turismo film will be released in theatres on August 11th, 2023, which is earlier than we might have thought. The film, which is based on a true story, will be directed by Neill Blomkamp.

The official logline (aka short summary) of the film is as follows: “The film is based on a true story of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racing car driver.” That means the film will most likely be based on the narrative of someone from the GT Academy, which existed from 2008 to 2016 and allowed Gran Turismo pros to compete for a spot on a real-life racing team sponsored by Nissan.

The film is only one of numerous PlayStation game adaptations in the works for both the big and small screen. The first hints of a Gran Turismo movie surfaced last month, alongside rumors of a Horizon Zero Dawn Netflix series in the works. Will Arnett will play Sweet Tooth in Twisted Metal, which is coming to Peacock. Filming for HBO’s The Last of Us concluded last week, but the show will not be released this year. Sony announced a Ghost of Tsushima film last year and is reportedly working with Amazon on a God of War TV show.

That may seem like a lot of video game adaptations, but some previous films based on gaming franchises have been huge hits, suggesting Sony’s strategy will pay off. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by Sega and Paramount exceeded the original at the box office, while Sony struck gold with their Uncharted film, which was released this year despite mixed reviews.
