During Tesla’s opening party for its Giga Texas factory last year, CEO Elon Musk announced that the long-awaited Cybertruck would finally hit the market in 2023. Now, we have further details regarding its launch. According to recent reports from The Verge, Musk informed Tesla investors during the most recent earnings call that the automaker would be holding a Cybertruck delivery event in the third quarter of this year. While the vehicle will begin manufacturing this summer, volume production is not expected to start until 2024, as previously stated by the company.
During the earnings call, Musk emphasized the challenges of producing such a unique and “radical” product, stating that “it takes time to get the manufacturing line going…it’s not made in the way that other cars are made.” The production version of the Cybertruck unveiled last year featured automatic door opening and no visible door handles. The vehicle is constructed of stainless steel, which is significantly more expensive than industry-standard steel, and requires specialized welding techniques and custom-made components.
The Cybertruck has faced multiple delays since its initial announcement in 2019, with Tesla’s original launch date of 2021 being pushed back first to 2022 and then to 2023. The vehicle’s price point was initially set at $39,900 for a single-motor configuration, up to $70,000 for a three-motor one. However, earlier this year, Tesla warned that final pricing and specifications have yet to be determined, and will likely be impacted by factors such as supply chain shortages and the state of the economy.
