Sony is set to host a State of Play showcase event on Thursday, April 13th, and Final Fantasy XVI is the main attraction. The stream, which will be available at 5PM ET on PlayStation’s various social media channels, will offer 20 minutes of new footage of the highly anticipated RPG from Square Enix.
Since its initial announcement in 2020, Final Fantasy XVI has suffered from a COVID-19 delay, but it is finally set to be released on June 22nd for PlayStation 5. So far, fans have only been treated to trailers with minimal gameplay, making the upcoming 20-minute footage reveal a real treat for fans eager to get their hands on the latest installment in the series.
While the news of a deep dive into Final Fantasy XVI is exciting, fans should temper their expectations for any other major announcements during the event. Sony has not mentioned any other games, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Death Stranding 2, or new titles for the recently released PlayStation VR 2.
Though the gameplay of Final Fantasy XVI is still somewhat of a mystery, trailers have given fans a glimpse into the plot, which centers around humans who awaken massive monsters called Eikons. The highly anticipated game is the first mainline entry in the series since 2016’s Final Fantasy XV, making it an eagerly awaited addition to the franchise.
