Star Wars: Eclipse Breaks the Mold: No Game Over Screen and a ‘Simmering’ Release Approach

Quantic Dream's Unique Style Continues with Star Wars: Eclipse

Star Wars: Eclipse, the highly-anticipated project from Quantic Dream, appears set to maintain the studio’s hallmark interactive storytelling style, as it has been revealed that the game will break away from traditional conventions by omitting a game over screen.

In a recent interview held during the Tokyo Game Show 2023, Lisa Pendse, Vice President of Marketing at Quantic Dream, offered insights into the development progress of their next major release. She confirmed that Star Wars: Eclipse is indeed in the works, assuring fans that it is “simmering” and that the studio is operating without undue pressure from parent company NetEase.

“Can I say it still exists? Because it exists,” Pendse stated. “It’s just not ready. It’s simmering.”

Pendse further emphasized that NetEase is not imposing strict release dates on the studio, highlighting Quantic Dream’s commitment to delivering high-quality games when they are fully prepared. She noted, “Quantic Dream has always released games when they’re ready, and I think the high level of quality that you get when you buy a Quantic Dream game is a testament to the value of that approach. And it’s the same exact thing with Star Wars Eclipse. So you will know, but it’s too early right now to really give any update on it.”

In terms of gameplay details, it was revealed that Star Wars: Eclipse will align with Quantic Dream’s established style, which has been prominent in titles like Detroit: Become Human and Beyond: Two Souls. Notably, the game will break from the tradition of featuring a game over screen following challenging decisions, a characteristic that fans have come to expect.

Lisa Pendse explained, “One of the big focuses we’ve had when we announced Star Wars Eclipse was to make sure it was clear that this is actually an action adventure game that has all of the elements that you would come to expect and want from a Quantic Dream title, which is intricately branching narratives, multiple playable characters.” She went on to clarify, “There’s no game over. Anyone can die, anything can happen, and the story sort of continues so that those signatures are still there. But what we’ve been doing is even more ramping up our expertise in the gameplay arena.”

Star Wars: Eclipse presents a narrative-driven action-adventure experience set in The High Republic era, a “Golden Age” within the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order, taking place centuries before the events depicted in The Skywalker Saga.

Although the game was originally announced in 2021, it currently lacks a specific release window, following the tradition of other Quantic Dream titles, which often take several years to develop and perfect.
