Sony’s Refusal to Send Dev Kit to Mojang Stalled PS5 Minecraft Release

In a recent testimony to the Federal Trade Commission, Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, shed light on the reason behind the absence of a native PlayStation 5 edition of Minecraft. According to Spencer, Sony was “reluctant” to send a PS5 development kit to the team at Mojang, the developer of Minecraft. This delay in receiving the necessary equipment put Mojang at a disadvantage, as they were unable to start working on the PS5 version of the popular game.

As Mojang is part of Xbox’s first-party family of developers under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella, it is speculated that Sony may have been hesitant to share early editions of its hardware with its direct competitor. This reluctance affected Mojang’s ability to keep pace with other developers who had access to the PS5 dev kits.
