Sony doubles down on cloud streaming improvements with crucial acquisition

In a bid to strengthen their efforts in improving cloud streaming, Sony has completed the acquisition of iSIZE, a company that is an expert at deep learning. The UK_based company has been making great inroads in the realm of video processing, streaming and bitrate improvement, making this acquisition, a smart one for the Playstation maker.

Sony confirmed this news via an official blog post where they spoke a bit about what iSIZE brings to the company, and that they intend to use their expertise to improve their cloud streaming services.

“The acquisition provides SIE with significant expertise in applying machine learning to video processing, which will benefit a range of our R&D efforts as well as our video and streaming services.”

The cost of the acquisition has not been disclosed, but it seems pretty obvious as to why the acquisition was made in the first place. Sony recently added PS5 streaming to there PS Plus Premium Service. With this feature, players can enjoy their favourite PS5 games without having to download them on their console. However, to really enjoy this feature, the player must have a high-speed uninterrupted internet connection, and one of the worst things to happen in a stream, is poor quality and poor bitrate.

With iSIZE on board, Sony could bring in some facilities from their end that could make streaming a bit easier for players who do not always have the luxury of a high speed internet connection. This in turn would take the fight to the likes of Nvidia, who have taken a bit of a head start in this aspect, thanks to DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling)m which improves streaming quality and bitrate with minimal performance cost.

We hope that this new acquisition works out for Sony, and we can’t wait to see how quickly they can bring improvements to their streaming service.
