Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series rumored to feature two FE editions

Samsung could be launching two cheaper FE (Fan Edition) models as part of its upcoming Galaxy Tab S9 series, according to a report from SamMobile. The tech news site compared model numbers in Geekbench benchmarks and concluded that the SM-X516B and SM-X616B could be budget versions of the Tab S9.

The Tab S9, Tab S9 Plus, and Tab S9 Ultra are expected to have model numbers SM-X716, SM-X816, and SM-X916 respectively, so the two additional models are somewhat of a mystery. The benchmark results suggest that the FE tablets will feature a mid-range Exynos 1380 chipset, with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM.

Samsung has previously used FE versions to appeal to those who want reliable devices but do not want to pay flagship-level prices. While the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE was launched in 2021, there was no FE tablet with the Galaxy Tab S8 the following year. However, the signs now are that the FE model could be making a comeback.

The FE version of the Galaxy S22 phone did not materialize, but there is talk that a Samsung Galaxy S23 FE will be released this year. These tablets are expected to appear alongside the main Tab S9 tablets around August or September, following the schedule of the Galaxy Tab S8.

The ongoing effects of the global pandemic and economic uncertainty may have played a part in the delay of the FE models in previous years. However, Samsung may be looking to the success of Apple’s range of iPads to inspire its own range of price points. It will be interesting to see if the release of the two Galaxy Tab S9 FE models changes Samsung’s fortunes.
