Roblox, a platform renowned for its popularity among kids and pre-teens, is breaking away from its family-friendly reputation. The company recently announced that it will allow creators to develop content specifically tailored for users aged 17 and older. This move acknowledges a significant portion of Roblox’s user base, as the platform revealed that 38 percent of its daily active users in 2022 fell into this age bracket.
According to Roblox, creators will now have the freedom to explore more mature themes and storylines in TV shows and stand-up comedy on the platform. These themes may encompass violence, blood, crude humor, romantic elements, and alcohol. Additionally, players may encounter “unplayable” gambling-related content, such as designing a casino or depicting non-playable characters engaged in card games. Games involving luck and chance are also permitted, but simulated gambling, including activities like using virtual chips or betting, is strictly prohibited.
To access this mature content, users will be required to verify their age by submitting a photo of their driver’s license or ID along with a selfie to confirm their identity. Roblox asserts that this age verification system will instill greater confidence in the age and identity of its users, and additional verification methods may be implemented in the future.
Eligible creators are now able to start developing these experiences, and the rollout of mature content will commence for “eligible” users in the coming weeks. Roblox’s objective is to provide a safe and engaging experience for individuals aged 17 or older. The company has confirmed that eligible users need only provide their photo and driver’s license to participate in this expanded content.
While Roblox has traditionally positioned itself as a platform for younger audiences, evident in its recent collaboration with Razer to release kid-specific Roblox Edition gaming gear, the significant proportion of users aged 17 and older warrants a shift in focus. By introducing content catering to adult users, Roblox aims to meet the diverse needs of its expanding user base and offer engaging experiences for individuals of all ages.
