Resident Evil 4’s highly anticipated remake is just around the corner, and while fans are eagerly awaiting Leon Kennedy’s return to the treacherous Spanish village to save Ashley, there’s one detail that’s causing concern – the rain.
The already hostile and dreary atmosphere of the base game’s washed-out browns and greys is amplified by the addition of rain, but it’s not the presence of rain that’s the issue. Instead, the bright white and unshaded downpour clashes with the environment, detracting from the ambience of the game and pulling players out of the experience.
The rain’s color, size of the drops, and inconsistency across footage have sparked criticism and comparisons to other games, such as the notorious GTA Definitive Edition, as well as 2D Legend of Zeldas, and even a Simple Plan music video.
While some have praised the heavy downpour effect, others have called for changes to make the rain blend better with the environment and improve visibility. Regardless, with the game’s release just around the corner, it remains to be seen how this detail will impact players’ overall experience.
