Rockstar Games announced Thursday that Red Dead Online will no longer get “major themed content releases,” in part because the studio is focusing its resources on the next Grand Theft Auto title. Fans have asked if Red Dead Online has been abandoned, and while the game isn’t being discontinued, Rockstar will be producing less material for it in the future.
“Over the past few years, we have steadily shifted more production resources toward the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, realizing more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the greatest it can possibly be,” Rockstar stated in a blog post.
A Red Dead franchise fan account had been preparing a funeral for Red Dead Online for July 13th, the one-year anniversary of the game’s most recent big content update, prior to Rockstar’s Thursday news. The funeral is still scheduled for the following week.
Rockstar finally revealed in February that the next Grand Theft Auto game is in the works. The studio is also continuing to add content to GTA Online, and it highlighted some of the upcoming upgrades in a blog post on Thursday.
