Qualcomm is considering a transfer from Samsung foundries to TSMC for the production of its flagship SoC in the second half of 2022. According to prior leaks, the processor will most likely be dubbed Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+.
An interesting report we received was that Qualcomm is already shifting some of its existing SD 8 Gen 1 production from Samsung to TSMC, which we found to be rather plausible. However, the reason given back then was that Samsung’s yields are unacceptable, whereas the reason given today is that there are problems with the production process.
According to the manufacturer, an inefficient production method results in a higher power drain. We have yet to determine whether this is correct, and whether or not there will be a major difference in power usage between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Gen 1+ processors.
