Sony’s latest gaming console, the PlayStation 5, has been on a roll lately, according to a recent report. After an initial rocky start due to COVID-related production shortages, the console has enjoyed impressive sales figures over the past year. A combination of factors, including the console’s availability due to production finally catching up with consumer demand and a consistent stream of PS5-exclusive titles, have contributed to its success.
Recent quarterly earnings from Sony reveal that the PlayStation 5 has sold more than 38 million units as of the end of March 2023, surpassing the PlayStation 4’s sales figures after an equivalent period of time on the market. Moreover, sales have more than tripled compared to the same period a year ago, with 6.3 million units sold during Q4 between 2022 and 2023.
Jim Ryan, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show that the PlayStation 5 stock shortage is a thing of the past. With greater accessibility to purchase these highly sought-after consoles, along with major exclusive titles such as God Of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West, the PlayStation 5 has continued to thrive.
Sony’s upcoming lineup of exclusives, including Final Fantasy XVI, Spider-Man 2, and a new Wolverine game, is expected to bolster the console’s success further. Additionally, with PlayStation’s recent acquisition of a new development studio and the unveiling of a brand-new co-op shooter IP on the horizon, the PlayStation 5’s popularity may continue to rise, potentially even surpassing the all-time sales for the PlayStation 4.
