Google’s Pixel OS is set to receive a quality-of-life update that will separate the volume controls for ringtones and notifications, according to reports. While users can already adjust the volume for media and alarms separately, this feature will allow them to silence notifications without affecting phone calls. The update has been in the works for about 18 months, according to the original Google IssueTracker post. While Google didn’t see the request as a high priority, a comment on the post confirmed that the update would be available in a future build.
Android 13 QPR3 Beta 3 includes an ADB command hinting at the design change, and the update could arrive with the stable version of Android 13 QPR3 Beta 3. However, with Android 14 already in development, it seems more likely that the update will be included in this release. Android Police found the two sliders already enabled on an early Android 14 build, where setting the Pixel phone to vibrate mutes both volumes.
The update is expected to be unveiled at Google IO 2023 on May 10, where Google will likely showcase Android 14 before its official launch later this summer. Along with new features, the operating system is also expected to bring quality-of-life upgrades and a boost to device security. It’s unclear whether the slider changes will be a part of this package or if they’ll be revealed alongside the anticipated Pixel 7a phone.
The Pixel series is catching up to other Android phones thanks to the small redesign, which might seem like a basic change, but it will make a significant difference in user experience. By separating the volume controls for ringtones and notifications, users will be able to have more control over their phone’s sound settings, making it easier to manage notifications and calls.
