Philips Unveils ‘Ultra Efficient’ LED Bulbs That Slash Energy Usage by 40 Percent

Signify, a Dutch lighting company, has launched the Philips Ultra Efficient LED bulbs that use 40 percent less energy than its regular LED bulbs. The new LEDs are designed to reduce the yearly energy cost to between 55 cents and $1.03 per bulb. Signify claims that the “advanced” LEDs and optics, used in the Ultra Efficient line, will reduce energy consumption and waste. The new line is expected to have a lifespan of 50 years, which is more than three times the usage of Philips’ standard LED bulbs.

The Ultra Efficient line is available as a Walmart exclusive, with prices starting at $10 for a 60W-equivalent A19 bulb ($17 for two) in soft white and daylight variants. A 65W BR30 bulb is priced at $11, while a 100W A21 light costs $15. Although these bulbs are more expensive than standard LEDs, Signify believes that the lower energy costs and increased longevity will ultimately save customers money.

One drawback is that these new bulbs are not smart bulbs. Customers who want to use Philips Hue will still have to live with higher energy consumption, or use smart plugs. Despite this, the new line offers energy-efficient options that can help reduce energy bills, while being kinder to the environment.
