OLED MacBook Pro Not So Distant: Samsung to Mass-Produce 8th-Gen OLED Screens in 2026

Reports Suggest Apple's OLED MacBook Pro Might Arrive Sooner Than Expected

Amidst the speculation about the release of an OLED MacBook Pro, the latest reports bring fresh hope for Apple enthusiasts. Samsung is set to initiate mass production of 8th-generation OLED screens in the first half of 2026, according to a recent report from UBI Research. This development could potentially hasten the arrival of the much-anticipated MacBook Pro equipped with an OLED display.

Samsung’s Early Investment in OLED Technology

UBI Research’s report revealed that “Samsung Display decided to invest in the 8th generation OLED line for IT products early this year.” This investment encompasses OLED screens for a range of IT devices, including laptops, tablets, and monitors. Samsung had initially entered discussions with Apple back in 2021 about the possibility of developing OLED screens for MacBook models. The original timeline aimed for a 2025 launch, but it faced multiple delays over the years.

Apple’s Influence on Release Dates

While Samsung’s commitment to producing 8th-gen OLED screens is a significant step forward, Apple remains the final arbiter of release dates for its MacBook Pro lineup. This means that the OLED MacBook Pros may launch in the second half of 2026, or even as late as 2027. Several previous reports, including one by The Elec, also suggested that Apple fans might have to wait for up to four years from 2023 before witnessing the release of the first OLED MacBook.

Competition in OLED Screen Development

While Samsung is taking the lead in OLED screen production, other industry players are also making strides in this arena. Both LG Display and BOE have plans to develop 8th-generation OLED screens. However, they must secure the necessary investment funds and clients before progressing. Their involvement in the development of these advanced OLED panels could contribute to more options in the future.

Challenges Related to Costs and Sales

Apple’s consideration of OLED MacBook Pro releases is not without its challenges. The costs associated with 8th-gen OLED technology are substantial, especially considering that larger substrates are required. Both Samsung and LG are yet to finalize these substrates. As a result, the price Apple would need to pay for these panels remains uncertain. Furthermore, a May 2023 report from The Elec indicated that Apple’s revenue experienced a decline in Q2 2023 compared to the previous year. The financial aspect adds a layer of complexity to the arrival of OLED MacBook Pros.
