Google is entering the field of AI-powered image generation, directly competing with Microsoft’s Bing Chat. The search giant has initiated testing of an image generation tool within the AI-powered Search Generative Experience (SGE). This feature enables users to input prompts into Google Search, and within a few seconds, it generates four images based on the query. What sets it apart is the ability to choose an image and refine it further by editing its description to add more details. Google provides an example where users can request SGE to generate a “photorealistic image of a capybara” cooking breakfast in the forest. The demonstration then allows users to modify specific elements, such as changing the type of food the animal is cooking or altering the background scenery.
Expanding Access Beyond Google Search
Google intends to make this image generation feature accessible beyond just Google Search. Users might soon encounter the option to create AI-generated images directly within Google Images. In this scenario, one of the image search results will be replaced with a button that provides access to the image generation engine. The generated images will appear in a separate sub-window.
Safety Measures and Transparency
While Google is venturing into AI-generated images, it has implemented safety measures to ensure compliance with the company’s policy for generative AI. Content that contradicts Google’s guidelines, including promoting illegal activities, spreading misinformation, or generating explicit material that lacks educational or artistic value, will be blocked. Additionally, every AI-generated image will be marked with “metadata labeling” and a watermark indicating its AI origin. In the future, AI content will also feature an “About This Image” description, providing important context to users.
Initial Availability and Limitations
Google has introduced this test primarily to English-speaking American users who have opted into the SGE program. Users must also be 18 years or older to access this feature. Notably, not all users will have access to this tool, and availability may be limited. The company has not provided specific information regarding international releases.
Google’s Multifaceted SGE
In addition to image generation, SGE offers the capability to draft messages or emails, making it convenient for users who may require assistance with written communication. Google highlights an example where users can request the AI to “write a note to a contractor asking for a quote” for a home renovation project. The drafted content can then be imported into Google Docs or Gmail for further customization. Google ensures that the level of protection provided for this content is equivalent to the security standards associated with Google Workspace.
Rollout and Potential for International Expansion
Similar to the image generation feature, SGE drafts are being rolled out to American users in English. While there is no official word on plans for international expansion, inquiries have been made to ascertain the possibility.
Google’s foray into AI-powered image generation and content drafting through SGE underscores its commitment to harnessing AI to assist users in various aspects of their online activities. As the technology evolves and becomes more accessible, it could significantly impact user experiences on Google’s platforms.
