Apple has been a pioneering force in advocating for passkey technology, offering support for it early in the game. However, prior to this expansion, only Apple and its proprietary Keychain password manager could create and manage passkeys on Apple devices, limiting cross-platform functionality.
NordPass rightly highlights that this limitation was a hurdle for password managers, preventing them from delivering fully multi-platform passkey storage that seamlessly operates across all devices. However, Apple’s announcement with the launch of iOS 17 changed the game. It now permits third-party password managers to offer passkey support for apps and websites on Apple devices.
