MediaTek is taking the wraps off its latest chipset heavyweights at COMPUTEX 2024, doubling down on AI processing prowess to elevate user experiences across Chromebooks, smart TVs and displays. The Taiwanese semiconductor company has two new flagship SoCs launching at the show aimed at turbochargingportable computing performance and premium 4K entertainment hardware.

Headlining MediaTek’s lineup is the octa-core Kompanio 838, a powerfully efficient chip squarely targeting the premium Chromebook market. The company claims the 838 packs outstanding multitasking capabilities while enabling all-day battery life in thin and light laptop designs. A key ingredient is MediaTek’s dedicated NPU 650 AI processor, which the company says can enable more interactive, higher-quality multimedia experiences compared to previous generations.

On the display side, MediaTek is unveiling the Pentonic 800 SoC to deliver what it calls best-in-class video, audio and cloud gaming for 4K smart TVs, monitors and commercial/embedded screens. The 800 packs an upgraded AI engine that MediaTek claims offers 50% faster AI processing over its predecessor, while reducing bandwidth consumption by up to 60%. That turbo-charged AI muscle powers a suite of upscaling, picture quality and noise reduction enhancements.

Both the Kompanio 838 and Pentonic 800 integrate MediaTek’s latest multimedia engines, including an upgraded Imagiq ISP for enhanced HDR imaging, low-light capture and multi-camera support on the 838. The 800, meanwhile, touts robust video decode acceleration for efficient 4K streaming across codecs like AV1, VVC and AVS3.

With partners like Lenovo, Acer and others expected to embrace the new chips, MediaTek clearly has its sights trained on elevating AI-accelerated user experiences across premium mobile computing and home entertainment product ranges.

The company isn’t stopping there, however. COMPUTEX attendees can also expect MediaTek to showcase technology demonstrations spanning verticals like smartphones, IoT devices, routers, automotive and more. Bookending the conference is a keynote by MediaTek’s Vice Chairman and CEO Dr. Rick Tsai on Tuesday exploring how the company’s AI solutions can transform mobility, smart home, industrial and enterprise environments.
