McLaren to auction unreleased 2026 MCL40A at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in unprecedented public sale

McLaren is set to take an extraordinary step in Formula One history by auctioning the unreleased 2026 MCL40A at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend. RM Sotheby’s will list the car on December 5, 2025, marking the first time a next-generation F1 machine has been offered to the public before ever racing.

The estimated sale price sits between 10 and 12 million dollars, a figure driven by its status as a fully operational chassis built for the first season under the 2026 regulations.

A race-used chassis from Norris or Piastri

The successful bidder will receive a chassis campaigned by either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri, complete with the 2026 Mercedes-AMG HPP 1.6-liter V6 turbo hybrid power unit and full race livery.

To prevent sensitive information from reaching rival teams, McLaren will not deliver the running car until late Q1 of 2028.

Until then, the buyer will be supplied with a 2025-spec show car for display only. The real MCL40A will be supported by McLaren mechanics and engineers for demonstration outings and private track sessions once handed over.

The next-generation rules that redefine the car

The 2026 overhaul will bring the biggest technical change since the hybrid era began. The cars will be shorter, narrower and lighter, while introducing active aerodynamics at both axles.

Powertrain architecture will shift dramatically as well. Combustion output falls to around 400 kW, while electric power increases to 350 kW. Braking energy recovery doubles and the series moves to advanced sustainable fuels.

These changes place the MCL40A in the first wave of cars designed for an era focused on efficiency, hybrid performance and reduced drag through active aero.

High-end benefits for the winning bidder

The auction package includes experiences rarely offered even to team partners. The buyer and five guests receive:

• A private tour of the McLaren Technology Centre
• Time with Zak Brown, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
• Entry to the official MCL40A launch
• Premium hospitality at two races including Monaco, with pit access
• Tickets to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500

Owning an operational contemporary F1 car is nearly unheard of. Since 2014, active turbo-hybrid units have been sold only a handful of times, as they require specialist technicians to run safely. McLaren’s decision to offer a functioning 2026 chassis makes this auction one of the rarest opportunities in modern motorsport.

Alongside the MCL40A, RM Sotheby’s will also list a 2026 Arrow McLaren IndyCar and the marque’s first LMDh prototype ahead of its 2027 WEC debut.
