Lance Stroll arrived at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix with firm words for the media. Asked about recent stories claiming he had considered stepping away from Formula 1 before the 2024 season, Stroll rejected the rumours outright, calling them “fake news.” He showed no interest in expanding on the subject, preferring to shut it down immediately.
The noise began after reserve driver Felipe Drugovich made comments on the Brazilian podcast Na Ponta dos Dedos. Drugovich explained that when he renewed his contract for 2024 and 2025, Aston Martin discussed scenarios where he could have taken a race seat. He added that “at one point, there was talk that other drivers didn’t want to continue,” and noted that “there was a really high possibility Lance wouldn’t continue.”
Those remarks reignited long-standing speculation surrounding Stroll’s motivation and future. Various Brazilian outlets claimed Stroll had twice informed the team of a desire to step back, only for team owner Lawrence Stroll to block the idea. Drugovich’s comments were interpreted as indirect confirmation of internal discussions that may have taken place.

Previous rumours continue to shadow Stroll
This is not the first time Stroll has been linked with departure rumours. In 2023, stories circulated claiming he was considering a move away from F1 to pursue tennis. Stroll laughed those reports off, and the current situation follows the same pattern.
Despite that, the speculation persists. His recent results have been inconsistent, and his public media presence has been minimal. These factors have contributed to a perception that his motivation may be wavering, even if Stroll insists otherwise.
Contracted through 2026, but dynamics are more complex
Officially, Stroll’s contract runs until the end of 2026. In practical terms, however, the structure of the team means that his place on the grid has always been tied to the ownership of his father, Lawrence Stroll. That reality makes a conventional contract less relevant than in other driver situations.
Aston Martin’s internal politics have also attracted attention. A major restructuring of the technical department is underway as the team prepares for its works partnership with Honda in 2026. The uncertainty around leadership and the future direction of the project has only intensified interest in Stroll’s long-term role.
For now, though, Stroll has made his position clear. He intends to continue, and he has no patience for suggestions to the contrary. Whether that puts the rumours to rest or simply postpones the next wave remains to be seen.
