How Steam’s New Notifications, UI, and In-Game Overlay Will Improve Your Gaming Experience

Valve has released a major update for its Steam desktop client, addressing long-awaited improvements and incorporating features that have been tested in the app’s beta channel. The latest update introduces refreshed fonts and menus, a redesigned notification system, and a revamped in-game overlay. Valve also announced that the platform has been rebuilt with a new framework, allowing features to be shipped simultaneously across all versions of Steam.

One notable aspect of the update is that several new features are now available on the Steam Deck as well. Valve highlighted the overhauled in-game overlay, which includes a new interface, a more versatile toolbar, and a syncable notes tool that can be accessed across multiple devices. With the new framework, this feature is now accessible on both desktop and Steam Deck devices. The overlay also introduces a “pin” feature, enabling users to keep the notes tool or any other in-game interface window visible during gameplay.

Valve has also focused on improving the client’s notification system. Clicking on the notification icon will now display only the most recent and relevant notifications, prompting users to access a full historical view with a single click. Additionally, users can expect small updates throughout the client, including updated dialog text, new fonts, and adjusted colors.

While the new features are noteworthy, Valve is particularly proud of the underlying improvements made to the Steam client. Alongside the new framework, the company has enabled hardware acceleration for Mac and Linux users, promising a smoother experience across all platforms.

Finally, the update marks a potential end to the legacy Steam Big Picture mode. The removal of the command line option to enable “oldbigpicture” suggests that users will now transition to the Steam Deck interface.

The new Steam Client update is available for download now, allowing users to take advantage of the enhanced features and improved performance on their desktop devices.
