It looks like data breaches are back, and this time, the victim is the official airline of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Gulf Air. The airline confirmed to the press that they had suffered a data breach and customer data has been compromised. They also issued a press release where they provided more information. The breach supposedly took place on the 24th of November, and the hackers have gained unauthorised access to customer information such as names, email addresses, and more.
The Airline has not made clear, the kind of attack that was carried out, so it is right now, anybody’s guess. “Necessary contingency plans were instantly activated to contain the incident,” the company added. The cyberattack has only affect customer data, which is not good, but the one positive that the airline has taken from this episode is that the hackers could not do anything to disrupt their day to day functioning, and all systems, as of today, are up and running.
Gulf Air is looking into possible remedies to prevent such an event from repeating itself in the future. Data protection might be provided to the affected customers for a period of time, but they have informed existing and new customers to remain vigilant online, and keep their data protected.
