Google Sells Domain-Hosting Business to Squarespace: What’s Next?

Google Domains, a popular platform for domain registration and website building, will soon no longer be a part of Google’s business portfolio. Squarespace, a leading website development and hosting company, announced today that it will acquire approximately 10 million domains from Google. The transaction is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2023.

As part of the purchasing agreement, Squarespace has committed to honoring existing customer pricing for a minimum of 12 months following the completion of the acquisition. The company aims to ensure a seamless transfer of domains by utilizing Google’s infrastructure.

Once the transition is complete, Squarespace will become the exclusive partner for individuals seeking to purchase a domain alongside their Google Workspace domain. Existing customers who have already purchased domains through Google Domains will receive billing and support from Squarespace for their Google Workspace accounts. However, over time, these customers may be required to migrate to Squarespace’s billing system as their subscriptions renew.

Squarespace’s decision to acquire Google Domains comes as no surprise, considering its prominent position in the website and domain space. The company has been consistently expanding its platform, introducing new features such as the option to create a “Members Area” (commonly known as a paywall) on new and existing sites.

While Squarespace’s move strengthens its market presence, it raises questions about Google’s motivation to sell. Google has a history of discontinuing established products, often abandoning them unexpectedly. Nonetheless, Squarespace’s track record of innovation and its commitment to enhancing its platform likely made the acquisition appealing to both parties involved.

The acquisition of Google Domains by Squarespace marks a significant development in the web and domain services landscape. As the transaction progresses, customers can expect a smooth transition and continued support from Squarespace, coupled with the company’s dedication to advancing its offerings and delivering a comprehensive website-building experience.
