Beginning in early 2023, Google Fiber will offer 5Gbps and 8Gbps tiers. According to a blog post by Amalia O’Sullivan, director of product management, the company is pitching these new offerings to creative professionals, those who regularly work “in the cloud” or with large data sets, and households with many people sharing the internet.
Each tier includes a Wi-Fi 6 router and up to two mesh extenders, as well as professional installation, but you can use your own router if you prefer. The 5Gbps tier will set you back $125 per month, while the 8Gbps tier will set you back $150 per month. Both will have upload and download speeds that are symmetrical.
For a time, it appeared that Google Fiber was in trouble, especially after layoffs in 2016 and the decision to leave Louisville, Kentucky entirely. However, in August, the company announced major expansion plans, including plans to bring Fiber to states such as Nebraska, Nevada, and Idaho. Furthermore, the new speed tiers announced on Thursday expand on the 2Gbps offering that debuted in 2020.
