Google Introduces New Chrome Extension Management Tools for Businesses

Google has rolled out a series of new features aimed at helping IT administrators better manage Chrome browser extensions within enterprise environments. These tools are designed to enhance security and streamline the user experience by giving companies greater control over the Chrome Web Store.

Curated Chrome Web Store for Enterprises

Starting today, businesses can create a curated Chrome Web Store experience for their employees. This allows companies to feature pre-approved extensions on the landing page, making it easier for users to find and install trusted tools. Businesses can also highlight other vetted add-ons, group extensions for specific tasks, and customize the store’s interface with their branding, including logos, images, and announcements.

The move is part of Google’s effort to address security concerns associated with malicious extensions, such as the December phishing campaign that compromised several Chrome add-ons, including the Cyberhaven data security tool.

Upcoming Admin Controls

Later this year, Google plans to introduce additional controls for IT admins. A new Chrome Enterprise Core setting will enable administrators to remotely uninstall extensions from employees’ systems and block future downloads automatically.

Another upcoming feature, expected in the near term, will allow admins to display custom messages on extension detail pages. This could provide employees with important compliance details about how specific extensions align with workspace policies.

By offering these tools, Google aims to help organizations balance productivity and security while minimizing the risks posed by malicious browser extensions.
