Meaning – Delta is a term that is used to denote a change in value. Usually, when there are two codes that have been written for a similar purpose, a study is done to determine the changes between the two, and the outcome is termed as a delta.
The term delta is also used in the context of encoding, where delta encoding is a way of storing or transmitting data in the form of differences (deltas) between sequential data rather than complete files.
Another version of the word delta is where a certain outcome is reached by increasing or changing the applied inputs by a percentage value. This percentage change in value is known as a delta. Many a times, the amount of delta is also a benchmark to determine whether or not, the outcome is a favourable one.
Example of usage – “The employee was tasked with studying the delta in the inputs, as the company feared that the change in inputs was a little above expected.”
