Global Smartphone Shipments Drop 15.4% in 4Q22: Apple Leads with 74 Million Units, Samsung Stays Strong, Chinese OEMs Struggle

In 4Q22, global smartphone shipments decreased by 15.4% YoY to 301.5 million units, with most major OEMs recording significant negative growth compared to the previous year. Apple recorded the most shipments with 74 million units, a 41.6% increase from 3Q22 but a 13.3% decrease YoY, and its market share increased YoY to 25%. Samsung saw a 15.4% decrease YoY to 58 million shipments, but its market share remained stable. Chinese OEMs, including Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo, all recorded a decline of over 25% in 4Q22 compared to the same period in the previous year. Honor and Transsion seemed to be more resilient, while Realme experienced the largest fall of any major OEM with a 31.5% decrease YoY to 11 million units. The slump in Chinese OEM shipments is due to a local economy recession, pandemic-related lockdowns, high inflation, and difficulties in the Indian smartphone market, among others.
