Game Development Won’t Be Revolutionized by Generative AI Just Yet

The potential of generative AI has been the talk of the video game industry, with some believing it may completely change how games are created. Development teams might spend more time on higher-order activities like narrative and creativity if repetitive and tiresome chores were automated by AI. However, several professionals in the industry are dubious about the marketing hype and are warning against utilising generative AI in game creation.

The hype around generative AI, which some people perceive as a method to automate artists’ employment and regard as progress, is one of the key issues. This narrative, however, fails to acknowledge the reality that making a video game needs a significant amount of effort and creativity and that automating some jobs may not always result in better games.

The disconnect between generative AI claims and reality is another problem. Numerous experts have noted that although AI may be able to create basic weaponry or compose dialogue, using it to level design is harder. No matter how beautiful the level may seem, a broken game level has to be manually fixed.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red’s acting franchise content strategy head, Patrick Mills, has called certain generative AI claims in the gaming industry “ludicrous” and said that using AI to create whole game environments is still a ways off.

The hype has also been challenged, with Julian Togelius, co-director of the NYU Gaming Innovation Lab, calling it “crazy” and “the worst sort of crypto bros.” Julian Togelius has written extensively about generative AI in the game business. He contends that although generative AI may be helpful in the creation of video games, game designers should be cautious when using it and realistic about what it can do.

Finally, although the potential for generative AI in the gaming sector is intriguing, it’s critical for developers and business executives to approach the subject from a practical angle. Before the technology can be extensively accepted in the industry, it is still in its early phases and faces several obstacles. However, it’s feasible that generative AI may ultimately prove to be a useful tool for game creators to produce more engaging and distinctive gaming experiences with continuous study and development.
