Final Fantasy XVI will be released in the summer of 2023

If you like Final Fantasy, this State of Play is for you. Square Enix has given a little more information on Final Fantasy XVI today.

We get our first look at fighting in the new teaser, which involves high-speed real-time action reminiscent of what Cloud and the gang get up to in Final Fantasy VII Remake. The trailer also includes more of the enigmatic Eikons, strong creatures that resemble summons from previous Final Fantasies and appear to reside in human controllers known as Dominants. It appears that befriending or fighting these Dominants will be essential to the game’s plot.

Final Fantasy XVI was revealed in 2020 with a gory trailer unlike anything else in the usually cheerful and hopeful series. The game’s creative director is the much-loved Naoki Yoshida, giving fans of the franchise hope that this single-player game would be more like the critically praised MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV (which Yoshida also heads) and less like the critically disappointing but nonetheless outstanding Final Fantasy XV. Yoshida pledged that news regarding the game would be released in spring 2022, six months later than planned due to the epidemic. As part of that pledge, Yoshida stated that Square Enix will conduct press interviews in the following months in order to disclose additional details about Final Fantasy XVI.

Final Fantasy XVI will be released in the summer of 2023 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
