Dying Light 2 is giving out a free weapon to make up for the Winter Tales event

Techland, the creator of Dying Light 2, has apologised for setting the objective for the Winter Tales holiday event much too high, which meant that many players would have spent hours grinding for no reward. As an apology, Techland is allowing Dying Light 2 users to collect the event award for free for a limited period, regardless of the result of the event.

Last December, the Winter Tales event was introduced as a way to honour the holiday season with a range of themed zombies and exclusive goodies. Winter Tales, like past seasonal events for Dying Light 2, featured a $2.99 DLC that could also be obtained for free via gameplay throughout the season to encourage people to participate. Winter Tales, like Dying Light 2’s Halloween event, had a community-wide challenge that required players to collectively acquire gifts by killing zombies, with the event rewarding individuals if the community succeeded in collecting the requisite quantity of presents.

The community objective for Winter Tales, which required participants to collect 6 million gifts overall, seems to have been established by Techland rather poorly. Dying Light 2 gamers only accomplished less than half that amount over the span of many weeks, with fewer than 3 million gifts collected. Because this was not just a case of people falling short, but rather a mistake on the part of the developer, Techland is enabling players to claim the Bauble Mace legendary weapon award from the event for free until February 12. Techland also apologised for creating an impossible target in the first place.

It’s highly uncommon for Dying Light’s community events to fail, but a similar incident occurred last year when the Dying Light 2 community fell well short of a target requiring players to investigate 7 million Hag tracks, with roughly 2.3 million completed worldwide. This might be because Dying Light 2’s Bloody Summer event was crushed in a few days, raising Techland’s hopes for the future. Meanwhile, at the same time, the original Dying Light conducted a popular community event that required players to knock 5 million zombies from roofs.

Techland could make advantage of this experience to create more achievable objectives for the next Dying Light 2 events, or possibly provide more alluring incentives to encourage players to reach larger totals. There will be plenty of additional possibilities for participants to fulfil future objectives as the new year begins.
