CD Projekt Red, the renowned game developer, has disclosed a significant milestone for Cyberpunk 2077, reporting the sale of 25 million copies since its launch in 2020. This figure marks a substantial increase from the 18 million copies reported in April and 20 million in September.
CEO Adam Kici?ski, during an investor presentation on October 5, unveiled this remarkable achievement, noting the impressive pace of sales. He stated, “The phenomenal Witcher 3 achieved a similar level in 4.5 years, and here, in Cyberpunk’s case, a little over two years since its release, so we are selling far faster than we were selling the Witcher game.”
In addition to the success of Cyberpunk 2077, Chief Financial Officer Piotr Nielubowicz announced the latest expansion, Phantom Liberty, which launched on September 26, has already sold an impressive three million copies within its first week.
Nielubowicz provided context for this accomplishment by highlighting that 20 million gamers have either the main game on PC or the new consoles, including updated versions. He emphasized, “15% of all the gamers within one week bought the expansion. This is a phenomenal result, and this is just the beginning – the sales keep on climbing.”
When Cyberpunk 2077 was initially released in December 2020, it achieved the title of the biggest PC launch of all time, with eight million pre-order copies sold across PC and consoles. The game’s tremendous sales were attributed to the extensive excitement that had built up during its nine-year development.
Despite its tumultuous launch, Cyberpunk 2077 continued to thrive, selling up to 13 million copies before CD Projekt Red reached the 20 million sales milestone in September 2022, following the release of patch 1.6.
However, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Phantom Liberty will be the sole expansion for the game, with SVP of Business Development, Micha? Nowakowski, clarifying that this decision was based on technological factors rather than sales figures.
In other news, patch 2.01 has been officially rolled out, bringing a host of fixes, improved performance for the new Dogtown district, and REDmod support for Phantom Liberty, enhancing the overall gaming experience for players.
