Mortal Kombat fans are in for a spook this Halloween season as the iconic fighting game series gears up for a seasonal twist. However, the introduction of a Halloween-themed Fatality has raised eyebrows due to its availability – or lack thereof.
As reported by IGN, the presence of the Halloween Fatality was first disclosed in the recent version 0.134 update. In a seemingly nonchalant manner, the update simply stated: “Halloween Fatality added to the Premium Store.”
At the time of writing, the Halloween Fatality isn’t available for purchase in the store yet. In response to inquiries, WB Games Support mentioned that it would become available on Friday, October 27. However, it’s not the arrival date that’s causing a stir; it’s the fact that it comes with a price tag.
Twitter user @Noir_is_black expressed their frustration, stating, “The way we paid $70/80/120 for this game to have less free content [than] MK11 is sending me. Paying for new fatalities and voice packs is a new low.”
@_Addy_TT, echoing this sentiment, tweeted, “Buying fatalities in a Mortal Kombat game!? I spent £85 on this premium version of the game, and the content is really lacking, and you have the nerve to charge for basic things that should [be] in the game at launch.”
The sentiment was mirrored by @BeykandaForever, who wrote, “Mortal Kombat has become one of the best examples of monetization ruining video games.”
Mortal Kombat is no stranger to microtransactions, as it previously allowed players to purchase consumable ‘Easy Fatalities’ in 2015’s Mortal Kombat X with real money. These made executing the brutal finishing moves more accessible, though some could also be earned for free.
The controversy surrounding the Halloween Fatality continues, with the cost remaining undisclosed. As the seasonal content prepares to land in the shop, fans are left contemplating whether these types of paywalls are a step too far in a beloved franchise known for its intense battles and iconic fatalities.
