OpenAI confirms adult mode for ChatGPT is coming in 2026

OpenAI is preparing to loosen the strict content filters on ChatGPT with a new “adult mode” slated for early 2026. This feature is intended for users who find the current version of the chatbot too restrictive or “prudish” when discussing complex or mature topics. While the name might suggest something purely explicit, the update is more about allowing the AI to engage in nuanced conversations that are currently blocked by safety filters, such as detailed discussions on human sexuality, mental health, and relationships.

The rollout of this mode depends entirely on a new age-prediction AI that OpenAI is currently testing. Unlike traditional websites that use a simple “click here if you are 18” button, OpenAI is building a system that tries to infer a user’s age based on how they talk and the context of their requests. If the AI suspects a user is under 18, it will automatically apply the standard filters to keep the experience family-friendly. This behavioral approach is meant to be a more effective gatekeeper than the honor system, though it also comes with legal and privacy challenges that the company is still working through.

OpenAI’s decision to move in this direction follows similar experiments from competitors like xAI, which has been testing age-limited versions of its own chatbot, Grok. By creating a dedicated space for mature content, OpenAI can satisfy adult users who want more freedom while still complying with global regulations regarding online safety for minors. It also opens the door for more personalized AI experiences, which could encourage more people to sign up for premium subscription tiers.

You can expect to hear more about the specific launch date as we move into the first quarter of 2026. For now, ChatGPT remains under its existing, stricter guidelines. Once the age-prediction technology is fully verified, the adult mode will likely appear as a toggle or a separate setting for verified accounts.
